The movie - PlanesLike many, I have been waiting patiently the last several months for the opening of Disney’s latest offering. This movie is a spin-off of the wildly successful animated movie Cars, but since the theme was airplanes, what self-respecting pilot could resist?

The wife wasn’t over enthused about going, but my youngest daughter, who’s 8, couldn’t wait.

I managed to get my bunch along with two other families to leave the pool on a rare nice afternoon in Ohio to spend most of a ‘Benjamin’ – $76.00 to go see it ($13 per ticket for two adults, $11 per ticket for two kids, popcorn/cokes – $28). And we think flying is expensive?

Don’t worry I won’t spoil it for you, but I do want to share my thoughts and perceptions.

First the animation was flawless. We watched the 3D version, which was extra cool.

As some others have said, the audio was great to with just the right composition and startlingly accurate airplane noises.

This takes me to one if the most striking things about the movie – the technical accuracy.
Remember it’s a cartoon, er I mean an animated film, so there was lots of physics bending flying scenes, but it was done in a way that reflected a large body of flying knowledge among the creators. That also permeated the script which was both fun for the kids, but spoke to the pilots in the audience with its nod to the real deal. In one scene they gave out a real instrument clearance!

Will this movie catch on like Cars did 7 years ago?  sadly my first impression is I doubt it. It’s not because the movie isn’t great, in fact I’m not sure why I feel this way. Maybe I’m just getting a little cynical in my old age.

My eight year old loved it and promptly requested the DVD version along with the Wii game after the theatre lights came on.

Props –no pun intended– to Disney for the merchandising effort. We stopped at a grocery store on the way home and they had a prominent display of Planes toy characters. I took it as a positive sign that it looked like a pack of hyenas had just visited the display and there wasn’t much left. Checking out Amazon.com showed 1204 items that you can purchase related to the movie – that’s cool!

My hope is that it’s wildly successful in a way that has everyone, young and old, flocking to the local airports.

If you fly or just like airplanes, no matter your age, you need to see it. I found myself smiling most of the way through the movie and isn’t that reason enough?
