Accomplishments in Flight

One of the cooler things about flying is the ability to seek out and accomplish tangible goals. I don’t know about you, but I like having goals that I can strive for.

I think that’s why sports are so popular, because you always have something to shoot for. As adults, many of our hobbies take on this characteristic; if you are a runner you might be shooting to PR (personal record) a particular race; a golfer will always seek to lower their handicap; and the fisherman will go for that elusive biggest catch…you get the point.

To be able to attain certain benchmarks makes all the hard work and sacrifice worthwhile, no matter what you are doing. This is just as true in flying as it is in other pursuits, maybe more so. The challenge of obtaining higher and/or more specialized licenses and ratings is something that we should all consider. It really has nothing to do with career aspirations anymore than an amateur golfer who buys pro golf clubs; it’s about raising your current game.

And it doesn’t stop there. Your achievement will elevate your skills and your confidence and it will do something else that might not have thought possible – it will make flying MORE fun! Even if you aren’t exercising those privileges often, or ever, this new level of proficiency will be guaranteed to enhance your current flying – take my word for it!

Unlike the fisherman that bagged that a huge fish, you will actually have a proof of your accomplishments that essentially never goes away and who knows you may need those skills some day. You can even be rewarded in the form of lower insurance premiums depending on your situation.

As a professional pilot, in my organization, I am in a perpetual state of training, which I love. I can’t think of a better way to stay on top of my game than to be under instruction or evaluation on a consistent basis.

The average guy might train for their license and only see an instructor during the biennial, which is ok. Now think of how much better you would be if you were getting a more consistent regiment of training? Hey if you are a J-3 guy and your whole mission is to fly at 500′ and 60 mph to grab that $100 hamburger, more power to you and no frills needed. But there are a large number of guys that are flying some pretty sophisticated machines on some rather complicated missions and those folks could really benefit from an advanced education.

So if you never considered the possibility of adding on an instrument rating, or a commercial certificate, or a taildragger endorsement, or a seaplane rating, etc., you need to give it some thought. It will require some effort and some resources, but that’s part of it – if it was easy everyone would do it, right?

Situational Awareness: Do you know where your airplane is?

The concept of Situational Awareness (SA), goes back as far as Sun Tzu’s The Art of War, but where it really starts to show up in America is in the military, during WWI. For most of us, Situational Awareness was attached to human factors work being conducted in the 1990s, and it is still pervasive today in aircrew training.

There are several definitions out there, but the most widely accepted being, “the perception of elements in the environment within a volume of time and space, the comprehension of their meaning, and the projection of their status in the near future” (Endsley, 1995)

In our everyday flying we would do well to maintain SA to avoid unwanted surprises that can range from, a minor inconvenience to a complete disaster. Case in point, virtually all CFIT (Controlled Flight into Terrain) accidents are caused by loss of situational awareness. This has been a bitter pill for many. How can a perfectly good airplane, under control of its pilot, fly into the ground? There are many great books out there that discuss Situational Awareness. One of my favorite authors on the subject is Tony Kern. He had dedicated a lifetime to improving aviation safety and has written several outstanding books.

One of the largest ingredients in maintaining situational awareness is to not let yourself become distracted. Distraction has been cited in a number of high-profile accidents that are almost too unrealistic to believe, but they are true. Don’t dismiss this threat. In our modern electronic world, it is easier than ever to become distracted.

Task saturation is another threat to situational awareness. When we get overloaded, we lose our ability to gauge what is happening around us. It’s like looking at the world through a funnel and the more we get tasked, the narrower our field of view. We also lose orientation with respect to time in these instances. Our natural perception of time can be completely distorted.

Complacency is sometimes referred to as the silent killer because it sneaks up on you. Sometimes complacency is systemic in the individual or it could be just a momentary lapse. Being lackadaisical, taking things for granted, or otherwise having an attitude that “bad things only happen to other people,” is a great way to end up a statistic. Never take for granted that you are hurdling yourself at very high speeds through the air and that is not a forgiving environment.

SItuational awareness is the bedrock of safe flying. Even if everything else is in place; good pilot, good equipment, and good systems, not having a handle on your situation will make all those elements null-and-void.

There is a lot more that can be said, but I wanted to keep it simple and dismiss with all the theory. We can all relate to the information above and it’s important that we avoid re-learning any of those lessons.

Your Road to Wings: How to Become an Air Force Pilot

One of the things I’m fascinated with is military aviation. Even though I missed the boat in my youth due to bad eyesight, I still lament about “how it could have been” jousting the skies in an F-15.

I recently had an opportunity to pick up an interesting ebook by USAF Captain Jonathan Kulak, titled Your Road to Wings: How to Become an Air Force Pilot. Having come through the ranks to fly military airplanes, he knows what he’s talking about. In fact, I wish I would have had this kind of information when I was young, I might have gone for it in spite of my limitations. You see Jonathan gives you the inside scoop, not what’s out there in the rumor-mill or what a recruiter will tell you.

The book is very well written and to the point, no fluff. If you are interested or have a son or daughter that is interested in a career in the Air Force, this book is a MUST-READ.

Taking Planes to See Disney’s Planes

Anyone remotely interested in aviation is buzzing about this movie. Folks attending Oshkosh this year will get to be the first or Top Gun, to see it. The rest of us will have to settle for wingman. Of course I am talking about the theatrical release of “Planes” August 9th.

I have a predicament though. My son, now 17, is not into serving his father’s inner child by escorting me to the movie theatre to see an animated flick. Add if he was interested in seeing it, he could simply drive himself and take a certain red-headed young lady.

While we still go to movies together, the PIXAR/DISNEYTOON relationship has come to a screeching halt and I am in need of a new excuse.

Then the little light bulb came on inside. Over the years I have given many airplane rides. The current routine of departing from home base of Marysville OH (KMRT) to Urbana OH (I74) has developed. With a restaurant on the field, it is a classic place to what we all know and enjoy as the $100.00 hamburger, and encourage everyone to check it out.

After a little research I found a movie house that is less than five minutes away from a different airfield. A co-worker with a 6-year-old, is talking everything airplanes these days. I can take this little guy, his mom and dad to Bolton Field (KTZR). My experience has been most FBO’s are very accommodating, especially if you call ahead. We will bum a ride to the theatre, and I can confidently get my ticket with said young person in tow.

An early twilight flight with a little popcorn and family entertainment should make for a fun evening.

So recruit some airplane buffs, young and old and build your flight plan. If you live in the Columbus, OH. area and think you would like to join me, reply to this post.

9 Simple Ways to Keep From Killing Yourself in an Airplane

We are going to explore a few commonsense ways to stay out of trouble out there. The headline is a bit of a “grabber”, the point remains that flying is unforgiving. It can be extremely safe, but we can’t take that for granted.

Keep flying the airplane. This is a huge issue. Flying in this era of onboard gadgets, it’s super-easy to forget to fly the airplane. This implications of this are potentially disastrous. This afflicts light airplanes and airliners alike. The outcomes are the same.

Don’t hit anything, especially the ground. CFIT (or scud running) and hot-dogging have claimed a lot of lives. As an RV-driver the sporty handing of the lineage seems to promote this kind of flying, but no one is immune. Make sure you have situational awareness (CFIT). Don’t be a stunt pilot (hot-dogging).

Keep fuel in the tanks. Pouring over accident reports you would be amazed at how many of them involve not having fuel in the airplane. No one wakes up in the morning and plans to run their tanks dry, but it happens with all too much regularity.

Don’t fly VFR into IMC. Seems simple but in spite of all this high-tech stuff on our airplanes , pilots still violate this tenant that was written in blood.

Don’t panic. If something abnormal occurs the ability to keep your head is very important. Some one that freezes up or reacts irrationally with inevitably make a bad matter worse.

Stay proficient. The best safety device is a proficient pilot (not the parachute). Pilots lacking in this area are not only ill-equipped to handle an emergency, they are likely to produce one.

Maintain your airspeed. You may have heard that airspeed is life and that’s true, except the AOA evangelist are screaming at their monitors right now. Too often airspeed, or more accurately AOA, is allowed to degrade in a position that doesn’t allow for an adequate recovery.

Keep your eyes outside. Mid-air collisions are right up there with in-flight fires as being the scariest thing that can happen in an airplane. Just this week another mid-air claimed four lives in Phoenix. Tragic, and maybe unavoidable, but it might have been prevented with eyes outside of the cockpit.

Keep flying the airplane. We ended where we started, flying the airplane is the most important thing you can do. If you have an engine failure, for example, and you try to stretch the glide and stall/spin into the ground versus a controlled landing in the trees, you will get two completely different outcomes. Flying the airplane doesn’t just mean not being distracted, it also means making it stay in your control. Landing upright with a relatively low sink rate is what you are after – no matter the terrain.

Most Memorable Flight : First Flight of my RV-8

When the group (Blogging in Formation) settled on this topic for June I wasn’t sure what to write, but after some some introspection the choice was clear – the first flight in my RV-8 topped the charts as most memorable. Get a cup of coffee this is a long story!

One of the things that made it so memorable was the five years of anticipation leading up to that flight, you see I built the airplane from a kit.

Having decided I wanted to build an airplane in early 2006, I spent six months researching what I wanted. I looked at all types of airplanes before settling on the tandem seated RV-8. The RV actually exceeded my initial requirements, but I thought if I was going to spend five years of my life building, I better make it count!

I started the project in October 2006 and after 2425 hours of building across four years and nine months it was complete.

The building process was an amazing experience. I had rebuilt a couple of airplanes under supervision, but never tackled something so ambitious by myself. I learned so much. It’s really hard to explain such an experience. In the end, I also learned a lot about myself – something I hadn’t anticipated when I started this journey.

My family was very supportive and even helped work on it from time-to-time.

To minimize the impact to family time I used an unorthodox method of working each day before work, which forced me into an early-riser routine that I still retain to this day. I also made a commitment to do something on it each day, which really caused me to keep focus.

I did as much work as possible at home in my garage to minimize time wasted driving to the airport (:25 each way).

When I originally planned to build the airplane, I thought to myself that the time would go by anyway. In 5 years I could either wake up with an airplane or without, the effort and the money wouldn’t really matter in the future. Boy was I right. I almost can’t believe I crawled out of bed all those times and slowly crafted a machine that could propel me into the ether with grace and agility from my two-car garage. This isn’t because of super-human skill or motivation, it was sheer willpower and discipline. And indeed the time went by anyway…

After moving ‘Contrary Mary’ to the airport in July, I spent lots of early morning driving out to Buckeye to complete final assembly.

From the pictures you gather that the -8 is painted up like a warbird. This is a popular option amount RV-8 drivers and as a wannabe fighter pilot, this was a no-brainer. When I was searching for a paint scheme, I happened upon a copy of Air&Space that had a small article on a P-51D from WWII named “Contrary Mary” and the die was cast. I loved the paint scheme and my youngest daughter’s name is Mary so it was a natural fit.

The first flight happened August 13, 2011. That date is indelibly etched into my brain.

The days leading up to the first flight were highly energized. There were lots of things to do, and check, and verify.

Luckily I had a lot of support from my fellow builders and friends.

My friend, Glenn Pew, is a contributing editor for AvWeb and he suggested we do before-and-after podcast interviews to capture the experience for the AvWeb readers. That was super-fun. It really contributed to the buzz preceeding the coveted FIRST FLIGHT.

I recall a question Glenn asked in my interview. He asked if I had considered letting someone else do the first flight. In a truly smart aleck manner I quipped, “that would be like letting someone else sleep with my bride on my honeymoon!” Point made…

The reason Glenn asked that question was because he was aware that I had never flown an RV-8 or even ridden in one. But I had done many self-check outs in all sorts of airplanes so this wasn’t completely new territory for me. Not that I am some kind of sky-god, I was plenty nervous!

I was really lucky that I had a great technical counselor and flight advisor in Jim Baldwin. He is hangared right behind me and seemed to exhibit this “guardian angel” trait of always showing up at just the right times. Case in point, the evening before my first flight I was out there doing some last minute preparations and Jim popped in and suggested we take his RV-6 around the patch. That little “warm up” flight really helped calm my nerves the next day when I would be alone in my -8. This kind of serendipity seemed really uncanny with Jim, and it was much appreciated.

Jim is a pilot, longtime home builder who has built 2 RVs, and an engineer. His help really smoothed out the wrinkles.

The day of the flight, August 13th, 2011, dawned slightly hazy, but calm with a high overcast that was almost perfect for a test flight like this.

A friend and fellow build once remarked about the experimental category of our RVs and said that with several thousand RVs flying the “experiment” is really over. True words. It is unlikely that the design will cause me problems. But that is only mildly comforting when you prepare to launch yourself into the air in an amalgamation of parts assembled in your garage. There’s plenty that can go wrong.

I had arranged for a small group of helpers to join me that morning. The concept was to have a focused team, but no onlookers. Save that for the more sedate flights. This flight is too important to be distracted or feel any extra external pressure to go.

My wife and daughters stayed home, but I did bring my teenage son along. If you watch the video you’ll hear him.

As the team assembled I organized a briefing to go over my plan and to set some basic expectations. I was starting to feel the nerves a bit.

I had another RV flying chase, which at least made me feel better. My buddy Rick flew the RV-4 that he built and really did a great job supporting me that day.

Preflight complete, paperwork done, briefings accomplished…there was nothing left to do. Nearly 5 years of blood, sweat, tears, and $$$ culminated in that moment.

I had done this kind of work before in a previous life as a test/demonstration pilot for a kit manufacturer called Fighter Escort Wings, who built 2/3 scale P-51 Mustangs. That was exhilarating work, but I was young and bullet proof back then.

I found once I strapped in my brain focused on the task and not on the fear.

“I can do this!”

“I have DONE this!”

Setting on the runup pad, I was pretty focused at this point.

Engine start, taxi out, run-up, checklists, all complete. Once I got onto the 25′ wide runway at my home airport, it was all business. Power – check; instruments – check; keep it on the runway. With half fuel and a cool Ohio morning, I was airborne in a few hundred feet and climbing like a homesick angel. I passed through 800′ before the end of the 2700′ runway and started turning to stay over the field. Rick took off behind and gave chase, but my 200+ HP half-loaded RV-8 wasn’t to be caught. I leveled off at the pre-planned altitude of 4000′, a good altitude to get down fast if it was really bad, but also good altitude for options to glide in. Rick caught up to me in my constant turn to stay within striking distance of the field.

Everything was going great. The only glitch was the oil door latch didn’t couldn’t hold the oil door closed so it popped open on takeoff, but it was no big deal. There were nasty warnings from my EFIS, no funny smells, no handling issues, no unwanted vibrations – could it be this easy?

I experimented with slow flight and approach to stall. No issues noted. All system were tested on the ground, but until that moment NONE of them had ever been checked in the air. Primary and secondary control surfaces, constant speed prop, cylinder cooling, oil cooling, indications system (altimetry, airspeed, VSI), all being newly tested above terra firma.

After my planned :30 of droning, and checking, and pinching myself, it was time to return to that little runway. I had considered making the first landing at a more suitable (read:wider) field, but the calm winds beckoned that I give it a try. Besides, I wasn’t afraid to make a go-around if I bounced or if I was unstabilized.

Darn oil door spoiled some of the images. Thank goodness for Photoshop.

Rick followed me down the chute and somehow I pulled off a decent, if not long, landing. I intentionally landed long and a little fast to leave room for instrument error and pilot error for this first return.

I taxiied back to the hangar where the crowd had grown somewhat. It was great to come back victorious and to greet all those kindred spirits.

Elated to be back with no major problems and no screw-ups by yours truly!

I didn’t consider it ultra-dangerous, but it’s not normal ops either. Subsequent test flights where probably more threatening, but through the 40 hour test flight period there were virtually no issues and nothing scary since.

Only two years later, I still smile when I think back on that day. The pressure, the excitement, and the unmatched sense of satisfaction is still palpable today.

Was it hard – of course!

Did it test my patience – unequivocally!

Did it stretch my skills – without a doubt!

Was it a financial burden – yes, still is!

Would I do it all again – ABSOLUTELY!

Flying with Friends: Tom’s RV-4

Earlier this week I had the opportunity to fly with my buddy Tom, who built his own RV-4.

Tom is a former Air Force instructor, now turned corporate pilot. He built his RV-4 13 years ago and been loving it ever since.

He can’t bring himself to park it long enough to paint it, but that’s ok, her beauty in function more than makes up for the lack of form. This airplane get’s used – he has over 1300 hours on the hobbs as of this writing!

Tom lives in storm-ravaged Oklahoma on a grass strip. Sans the storm part, he is the envy of most self-respecting aviators by virtual of living with his airplane.

Since work brought Tom and his intrepid flying machine to Ohio, it afforded me the opportunity to go for a ride. It was big-fun, of course!

You might even see Tom again in a future post.

THE AUTHOR GEEKING OUT IN THE BACK OF THE RV-4

RVs are designed for sportiness. There are not a lot of frills, but they ooze performance. The niche just so happens to be across a range of flight that puts it right in the sweet spot for many pilots; 200mph-ish cruise, relatively cheap to own/operate, short field ability, aerobatic chops, great visibility and handling. It’s not a cargo ship or a globetrotter (although extremists have flown these around the world). RVs are popular and because of that, they are prevalent with over 8,000 flying as of this writing!

There is also a little stigma with these machines among some pilots. Some of it deserved, some not. We have also seen our fare share of accidents, although by percentage the airplanes are in line with other experimentals, there’s just more of us.

Many of us are working to try to destigmatize our image. We aren’t alone in this, several other large “type-clubs” are stereotyped unfairly because of a few bad apples; warbird guys, Bonanza drivers, and Cirrus pilots are a few examples of large groups that see some discrimination.

I say co-exist! I love all fixed wing conveyances!

So you may notice a trend in this week’s posts. That is by design and will culminate in my Sunday article about my most memorable flight as part of the Blogging in Formation Series that I participate in with five other aviation bloggers.

Testing my GoPro Hero 3 Black Edition or Another Excuse to Fly My RV-8

Some of the folks that frequent this site will know that my RV-8 has been down for maintenance. Luckily that has been remedied (more on that in a future article) and I am once again back flying my favorite airplane.

Conveniently I needed to test fly both the airplane and my new GoPro. The images you see below, and the tail-cam in the video, are some samples. The wing mounted camera is my old Drift 170HD, which has been working better lately for some unknown reason.

The flight took me from my home base at Buckeye “Intranational” Airport, over to Lancaster for some landings, and then up to Newark to repeat the exercise. I’m happy to report that the airplane, the cameras, and even the pilot performed to standards.

The video is 3:30 and in the famous words of Abe Lincoln, “I would have made it shorter if I had more time.”

It’s tuned for maximum cheesiness from the music to the self-indulgent editing – enjoy!

New Project

If you frequent this website, you might have noticed that the cadence that I post articles has slowed over the last month or so. That is because I’m working on a couple of side projects.

The first one I would like to tell you about is called FIXEDWINGBUDDHA.COM

Unusual name right? The theme of the site is “money-saving tips for pilots” and that will be the main content that is presented there. Additionally, I will throw some additive topics such as airmanship and altruism – hence the name. You won’t see editorials, reviews, flying reports, or anything like that over there.

I’m really excited about launching this new platform, but don’t worry, iFLYblog.com isn’t going anyway – It’s my main hub and I still need a place for all the other topics that are fun to discuss.

You’ll be hearing more about fixedwingbuddha in the coming weeks, but here’s your first chance to catch a glimpse and give your honest feedback.

Since it’s not done, I would ask that you not share it until the official launch, which will be announced here.
