New Project

fixedwingbuddha.com

If you frequent this website, you might have noticed that the cadence that I post articles has slowed over the last month or so. That is because I’m working on a couple of side projects.

The first one I would like to tell you about is called FIXEDWINGBUDDHA.COM

Unusual name right? The theme of the site is “money-saving tips for pilots” and that will be the main content that is presented there. Additionally, I will throw some additive topics such as airmanship and altruism – hence the name. You won’t see editorials, reviews, flying reports, or anything like that over there.

You will be the first folks to visit the site if you click the link above so please let me know what you think and if you see any areas for improvement. It’s still officially “under construction” and the plan is to make it more public something later in the month.

I’m really excited about launching this new platform, but don’t worry, iFLYblog.com isn’t going anyway – It’s my main hub and I still need a place for all the other topics that are fun to discuss.

You’ll be hearing more about fixedwingbuddha in the coming weeks, but here’s your first chance to catch a glimpse and give your honest feedback.

Since it’s not done, I would ask that you not share it until the official launch, which will be announced here.

New Aviation Resources page

pilot resources

I am pleased to add this new page to iFLYblog.com called Aviation Resources. You will always find it at the top of each page in the navigation bar.

The goal is to provide a single click where folks can go to see what I recommend in terms of products and more importantly, where you can find free stuff. This will be ever expanding so you’ll want to check it periodically.

If you have any recommendations on what should be in there, let me know – remember this is your blog.

New Transportation System: Kiwi Style

nasa pav

One of our fellow airmen, Dennis, sent me this video and I couldn’t resist sharing it with all of your fine fliers out there in the cyber-universe.

First, when it comes to modern air transportation systems. There have been lots of concepts batted around and NASA’s PAV (Personal Air Vehicle) Challenge has brought some promising technology to bear.

But I think the folks in New Zealand are on to something – I’ve always thought those Kiwis were sharp cookies!

Without further ado, I bring you New Zealand’s Aerial Commuter Demonstration:

So if you were wondering about where the next breakthroughs will come from, it looks like our brethren from down-under are the next aviation pioneers!

RV NATION: It’s a grass roots thing!

RV NATION: It’s a grass roots thing!
Scott Brown, creator of RV Nation, is building a community. A community of like-minded RV folks where they can come together to talk and exchange all-things-RV.

The really cool thing that Scott is doing is providing significant value to members. One of the ways is by leveraging the power of the group to obtain discounts from all sorts of cool vendors. These discount are a huge value-add for RV Nation members.

Another value-add is the RV Nation Squadrons. Almost like EAA chapters, they will provide a local club feel that really lets members connect.RVN Scott and tracy

RV Nation is also about grass roots flying. Keeping it simple and getting as many people involved as possible. They host an annual fly-in as well as a youth education events.

So don’t take my word for it. Go on over to RV Nation by following this link and look around. I have only scratched the surface, RV Nation has so many offerings and it continues to grow. Scott is very active and approachable with the members, so if you have any questions, he’d be happy to get back to you.

aviation apparel

Calling all you readers out there! We have a new company that is being started by a motived young man who needs our help. He is raising money to kickstart his venture and looking for contributions, but rest assured you’ll get something in return.

I’m talking about Ian Hoyt and his new company called Heading 370. Ian is a college student, a private pilot, and an entrepeneur. His company is going to revolutionize apparel in the aviation section. I encourage everyone to check out his website at heading370.com or hdg370.com for a preview of things to come. To see how you can get involved in helping out, keep reading.

From the CEO of Heading 370, Ian Hoyt, “However, lets face the fact, its hard to find a store that provides high quality creative apparel that is geared towards the aviation community. This is where Heading 370 steps in. In just a few short weeks our opening will officially be here. With this we hope to provide the community with a choice, a choice to pick something different. ”

Click here to access the page below which hosts a short video to learn more about what you can do and to hear from Ian regarding the campaign:

Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving Fellow Aviators

Thanksgiving means something different to everyone. I think for pilots it has a special meaning.

As aviators we get to experience something few mortals will ever know; the patchwork of our fragile Earth from above, the beauty of a sunrise from altitude, the playfulness of fair-weather cumulus clouds  -  all from our lofty heights.

The speed and agility of our machines are unmatched by earthbound conveyances.

The feeling you get when you break the surly bonds of the planet are only shared by our brotherhood. That bond that brings us together is as powerful as blood.

For all these things I am thankful.

Happy Thanksgiving brothers and sisters of the ether!

What are you thankful for?

FAA Safety Briefing: A Free Publication From the FAA

FAA Safety BriefingIf you don’t already know about the FAA’s free publication that comes out 6 times a year, you owe it to yourself to check it out.

FAA Safety Briefing is a very well done full-color glossy periodical that covers a wide variety of topics.

The Nov/Dec edition’s theme is on Small Airplane, Big World, so the focus is on international operations. Every edition has a general theme that the articles are written around.

I have found that most of the information inside is very well presented and useful to us GA guys.

If you want a hard copy that comes to your home, the FAA needs $21.00 per year to cover printing/mailing, but the online PDF is totally free or if you have FSDO in your area, they provide them free to the public.

The webpage is located here: http://www.faa.gov/news/safety%5Fbriefing/. This page has back-issues all the way to 2001! I promise if you go back and read all 61 editions you WILL be smarter than you are today.
