General Aviation Month

Ohio declares December as GA Appreciation Month

I often lament about living in Ohio, mostly because of the lousy weather. One thing I can’t complain about is general aviation (GA) in this state, it is alive and well.

Ohio-quarter

Every weekend, 9 months out of the year, there is some kind of fly-in or other GA venue. The state is littered with airports; it seems like there is one every few miles. There is also a vibrant base of aerospace employers, some going back to the days of the Wright Brothers.

Appropriately, Ohio Governor, John Kasich has proclaimed December of this year again as General Aviation Appreciation Month.

The proclamation is chocked full if interesting facts about GA in the state.

  • 163 airports with 90% of the population within 30 minutes from a 5000′ strip
  • 24,988 pilots
  • 10,113 GA aircraft
  • $10.5 billion annual contribution to the state economy
  • 142,800 jobs with an annual payroll of $3.2 billion
  • 60 charter operators
  • 2 fractional operators
  • 124 FBOs
  • 13 flight schools (must be 141 only)

Growing up and learning to fly in Oklahoma, general aviation wasn’t as prevalent; I was lucky to be with the right people at the right time early in my career there.

Ohio has a rich aviation history that would take volumes to capture accurately. I am glad to see our Governor celebrating our successes and continuing to promote what so important to us all.
