Testing my GoPro Hero 3 Black Edition or Another Excuse to Fly My RV-8
Some of the folks that frequent this site will know that my RV-8 has been down for maintenance. Luckily that has been remedied (more on that in a future article) and I am once again back flying my favorite airplane.
Conveniently I needed to test fly both the airplane and my new GoPro. The images you see below, and the tail-cam in the video, are some samples. The wing mounted camera is my old Drift 170HD, which has been working better lately for some unknown reason.
The flight took me from my home base at Buckeye “Intranational” Airport, over to Lancaster for some landings, and then up to Newark to repeat the exercise. I’m happy to report that the airplane, the cameras, and even the pilot performed to standards.
The video is 3:30 and in the famous words of Abe Lincoln, “I would have made it shorter if I had more time.”

Nice choice of music. 🙂 I’ve been thinking about these Go Pro cameras; I wonder how difficult they’d be to fasten safely and securely somewhere on the outside of an Archer.

I would be careful mounting anything to production machines. They make a suction mount good to 200mph (I haven’t tried it) that might let you stay in the “gray area” enough to stay out of trouble with the Feds.
If you aren’t worried about that, they are light enough to put into almost any fixed surface without issue via existing screws, at your own risk of course.
Nice video! I love the F-1 style speed slope windscreen on your RV-8, by the way. It makes your aircraft look about twice as fast as a standard -8, even when it’s sitting on the ramp!
